Find Restful Sleep with TMJ Treatment

Are you struggling to get a good night’s sleep due to constant tossing and turning? At the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of Pittsburgh, we understand how sleep disruptions can affect your quality of life. If you’re experiencing this nightly struggle, TMJ disorders might be the underlying cause, and our expert team is here to help you achieve restorative sleep.

What Does Tossing and Turning Have to Do with TMJ?

Tossing and turning refers to frequent movement during sleep, often caused by discomfort or pain. Many people don’t realize that this restlessness can be linked to Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ). When your jaw is misaligned or the muscles surrounding your TMJ are tense or inflamed, it can lead to pain, muscle tightness, and airway restriction, making it difficult to settle into a deep sleep.

Additionally, TMJ-related issues often contribute to sleep-disordered breathing, such as sleep apnea. These disruptions can cause your body to awaken repeatedly, preventing you from achieving the deep, restorative sleep you need.

Symptoms of TMJ-Related Tossing and Turning

If TMJ is contributing to your restless nights, you may experience:

  • Jaw pain or discomfort that worsens at night or in the morning.
  • Frequent headaches or migraines.
  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain that makes it hard to relax in bed.
  • Clicking, popping, or locking of the jaw.
  • Breathing interruptions during sleep.

These symptoms can lead to chronic sleep deprivation, fatigue, irritability, and reduced daily performance.

TMJ Tossing & Turning Relief in Pittsburgh

Frequently Asked Questions About Tossing & Turning Relief in Belle Vernon, PA

Q. Why do I keep tossing and turning at night?

A. Tossing and turning at night can happen for many reasons, including stress, poor sleep habits, or underlying health conditions. In some cases, jaw tension or TMJ dysfunction can make it difficult for your body to fully relax, leading to tossing and turning in sleep as your body tries to find a comfortable position.

Q. Can TMJ cause trouble sleeping at night?

A. Yes. Many patients experience trouble sleeping with TMJ because jaw pain, muscle tension, or teeth grinding can disrupt the body’s ability to rest comfortably. When the jaw joint is strained, it can cause discomfort that leads to tossing turning throughout the night.

Q. Why do I toss and turn all night without feeling rested?

A. If you toss and turn all night, your sleep cycles may be repeatedly interrupted. Conditions such as TMJ disorders, airway issues, or sleep-related breathing problems can prevent your body from reaching deeper stages of sleep, leaving you feeling tired the next day.

Q. How does TMJ affect sleep quality?

A. TMJ disorders can create tension in the jaw, neck, and facial muscles, which may cause discomfort while lying down. This tension can make it difficult to stay in a comfortable position, contributing to tossing and turning at night and frequent sleep disturbances.

Q. Can treating TMJ help reduce tossing and turning in sleep?

A. In many cases, treating the underlying jaw dysfunction can help improve sleep quality. Addressing trouble sleeping with TMJ through specialized treatment may reduce discomfort, helping patients sleep more comfortably without tossing and turning in sleep.

Q. When should I see a specialist for sleep problems related to TMJ?

A. If you frequently toss and turn all night, experience jaw pain, or notice other symptoms such as headaches or teeth grinding, it may be time to consult a specialist. An evaluation can help determine whether TMJ dysfunction is contributing to your sleep disruption and recommend appropriate treatment.

TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre has been a huge blessing! I've struggled with jaw discomfort for over 4 years after a car accident, and despite my best efforts, multiple dentists and an ENT doctor didn't want to believe the possibility that I might have TMJ disorder. I was dismissed and pushed with surgery - something I didn't feel was the right solution. I finally found Dr. Belasco after some research and have received exceptional care and treatment. I've been taken seriously with my concerns and the treatment I received was worth the investment. I didn't even realize how bad I was sleeping until visiting the TMJ Centre and Dr. Belasco utilized therapies to improve my sleep as well. After years of discomfort, I'm finally seeing noticeable and positive results with less jaw discomfort and improved sleep quality. I've recommended this place to several of my friends already and will continue to sing their praises. So grateful for them!

I originally went to this dentist because of TMJ pain, but ended up learning that I have obstructive sleep apnea, and that my nighttime clenching and grinding were major contributors to the chronic migraines I’ve struggled with for years. This dentist helped me so much more than any neurology office. Both Dr Belasco and Kris are always incredibly kind. There is never a wait, and I never felt rushed, even though I always came with many questions. I am grateful for finding this practice and would highly recommend them.

I had trouble with my TMJ pain for years. I tried appliances through my dentist that did not work and was in weeks worth of flare ups, having to take time away from work and family. I took a leap of faith and went to TMJ and Sleep therapy of Pittsburgh and they changed everything. They gave me all the information I needed to understand where the pain was coming from, and got me on a treatment plan I understood and was easy to follow with new appliances that were built for me. I have been pain free since starting with them in January! I highly recommend this office and Dr Belasco.

Very personable staff, Kris and doctor. Dr. Belasco spent hours with my mom. Very extensive testing to come up with a treatment plan for neuralgia. Can tell they care about their patients. For the first time after seeing numerous doctors, we are optimistic! Highly recommend.
