Understanding Trigeminal Neuraglia & TMJ
At the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of Pittsburgh, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related disorders. One such condition is Trigeminal Neuralgia, a severe facial pain syndrome that can significantly impact your quality of life. Our expert team is here to help you find relief and improve your overall well-being.
What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for transmitting sensory information from your face to your brain. This condition causes extreme, sporadic, and sudden burning or shock-like facial pain that can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. The pain episodes can occur in rapid succession and may be triggered by routine activities such as chewing, speaking, or even touching the face.
How Trigeminal Neuralgia Relates to TMJ
The temporomandibular joint connects your jawbone to your skull and is responsible for the movement of your jaw. Disorders of the TMJ can sometimes aggravate or mimic the symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia. Misalignment or inflammation of the TMJ can put pressure on the trigeminal nerve, leading to facial pain that is difficult to distinguish from Trigeminal Neuralgia. Proper diagnosis and treatment of TMJ disorders are essential in managing the pain and improving the function of the jaw.
Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia
- Sudden, severe, and sharp pain in the face
- Episodes of intense pain lasting from a few seconds to several minutes
- Pain triggered by everyday activities such as eating, speaking, or touching the face
- Pain typically affecting one side of the face
- Recurring bouts of pain over days, weeks, or months
